The Bachelor of Music is designed to provide specialist training in Jazz and Popular Music, Music Studies, Performance or Contemporary Music. Benefit from hands-on experience that is combined with academic study in the interpretation and understanding of music. During your studies you will be involved in a conservatoire-style environment that offers intensive individual training with professional musicians.

You will benefit from hands-on experience combined with academic study in the interpretation and understanding of music. On completion of the course you will have the knowledge and practical skills to be successful in your chosen career.

MAJORS

Jazz and Popular Music (Mackay only)

This major has a strong practical focus and enables you to develop knowledge and practical experience through performance (vocal or instrumental), composition and arrangement in a variety of jazz and popular music styles. You will have individual lessons on your chosen instrument with experienced teachers who are the best in their field. These one-on-one lessons are conducted in a range of modes including video technology, allowing you to study with some of the best teachers in the country no matter where you are studying. You will also study units in music theory, music history and music technology to prepare you thoroughly for a career in music performance or for further post-graduate studies in education and performing arts.

Music Studies (online only)

If you choose to undertake the Music Studies major you will focus on the historical, theoretical and cultural contexts of western music and classical, jazz or contemporary popular music. You will have the flexibility to tailor your studies to your own timetable using the comprehensive online resources provided for each of your units. You will also have the opportunity to study units in music theory, composition and arranging, music history and music technology to prepare you thoroughly for a career in music or for further post-graduate studies in education and performing arts. This major may be suitable if you would like to study a general music course by online study.

Performance (Mackay, Townsville and online)

This major has a strong practical focus and enables you to develop knowledge and practical experience through performance (vocal or instrumental) or composition in a wide variety of music styles. You will have individual lessons on your chosen instrument with experienced teachers who are the best in their field. If you are studying on-campus this will include regular face-to-face lessons. For those students studying by online study mode, you will access your vocal, instrumental or composition lessons through video technology, allowing you to study with some of the best teachers in the country without having to move on-campus. You will also study units in music theory, music history and music technology to prepare you thoroughly for a career in music performance or for further post-graduate studies in education and performing arts.

Contemporary Music (Noosa only)

If you are passionate about contemporary popular music performance, then this major will enable you to develop knowledge and practical experience in a wide variety of contemporary music styles. You will hone your skills through performances in a variety of contemporary popular music ensembles where you will have the opportunity to be mentored by some of Australia’s top professional musicians and recording artists. You will also study units in music theory, music history and music technology to prepare you thoroughly for a career in music performance or for further post-graduate studies in education and performing arts.
